Parsifal

by Richard Wagner
Bühnenweihfestspiel in three acts
Text by the composer
in German with German Surtitles
The survival of the Holy Grail’s community is threatened by King Amfortas‘ wound which he received by the magician Klingsor. The only hope that the men have left now is the arrival of a so-called »innocent fool«, who has to become »knowledgeable by empathy«. Parsifal is the chosen one, but is unaware of his appointment as the redeemer of their plight. The seeress Kundry takes it upon her to show him his destiny.

Richard Wagner‘s »Bühnenweihfestspiel« (Consecrated Stage Festival) unfolds its »Good Friday magic« in archaic simplicity coupled with bold harmony bordering on elements of atonal music.

Synopsis
Act I
The story is set in a vague future, in the aftermath of a catastrophe that has caused humanity to lose its faith. A sect-like group of men has formed a Grail community. Their leader, Amfortas, is unable to perform the vital ritual of the Holy Communion, having lost his belief in its power. A stranger intrudes upon the community and seizes the sacrificial offering. The priest Gurnemanz explains that no life should be taken deliberately and questions the stranger about his identity and origin—but receives no answer. When confronted with the dead offering, the stranger feels no guilt. The only woman present, Kundry, seems to know him. When she tells him of his mother’s death, he begins to feel a sense of guilt. Gurnemanz believes the stranger might be the long-awaited redeemer and takes him to witness the unveiling of the Grail. The stranger watches the empty ritual with astonishment—it offers fulfillment to the community but only brings pain to Amfortas. He fails to ask the crucial question that would lead to salvation. Disappointed, Gurnemanz sends him away. Since he is only a “pure fool,” he cannot yet be the savior.
Act II
The stranger now confronts the tormented Klingsor, who, struggling with his own desires, also seeks redemption. Klingsor’s "Flower Maidens" desperately try to seduce the stranger, appealing to his compassion, until Kundry addresses him by name: Parsifal.
Now appearing as a seductive figure and aware of his unresolved longing for his mother, she tries to awaken his senses and consciousness. But her kiss brings not desire, but compassion—Parsifal finally understands the suffering he saw in the Grail temple and the human need for salvation. The “pure fool” becomes “wise through compassion” and resists Kundry’s erotic advances. She pleads for his compassion, but Parsifal promises her something greater. His destiny is to heal Amfortas’ wound and restore the sacred ritual of communion to the Grail community. Klingsor's power is broken.

Act III
Suffering has deepened. Gurnemanz, now blind, finds the sleeping Kundry and senses that she has changed. Suddenly Parsifal reappears. Gurnemanz recognizes the spear Parsifal carries and realizes he is the same stranger he once guided—and rejected. Now, he sees in him the long-awaited redeemer. Moved by Gurnemanz’s account of the Grail community’s despair, Parsifal accepts his role. Kundry silently washes his feet, and Gurnemanz anoints him as the new savior. Parsifal is now ready to lead the Grail community. The starving men mourn the death of Titurel and call for Amfortas to join him in death. At this moment, Parsifal arrives, heals Amfortas with the sacred spear, and offers his body and blood in a restored communion ritual.

The end of religion
As in most of Richard Wagner's music dramas, redemption also plays a central role in Parsifal. The proximity to religion is therefore obvious. Together with station s, we look at Wagner's work from the perspectives of dramaturgy and music, with views and impulses from theology and spirituality.

Wagner in original sound
The readings that Richard Wagner organized while working on his works are legendary. Wagner's Saxon compatriot Daniela Victoria Kiesewetter, assistant director and evening director, will try to get closer to the true Wagner sound - some dialects are already music.
