Fidelio

The Opera is based on a narrative taken from the time of the French Revolution’s reign of terror. During the Habsburg Monarchy, however, all traces of a revolutionary context had to be erased. Beethoven’s enthralling music is nevertheless full of revolutionary urgency. The Stuttgart Opera’s new production develops its staging concept particularly from analyzing the opera’s spoken passages which helps to bring out all the sides in plot and characters that were originally denied and lost to censure.
