Modest P. Mussorgsky
Chowanschtschina
It is the first time that Mussorgsky’s choir opera is staged in Stuttgart: In Andrea Moses’ production the story is centred around the „Red Square“ in Moscow – in the past and present a legendary place for pompous parades, spontaneous uprisings and their brutal suppressions.
Andrea Moses continues where the large and revolutionary people’s movements since 1989 have left off. Her production criticises their gradual disappearance in the world of politics' day to day business.
When Mussorgsky himself was asked about the “musical people’s drama” he had created, he replied: »Only times have changed but people haven't: the Police service's control continues to exist and the snitcher’s business continues to blossom ...«.
